Q: Have you always said Y’all? If not, what brought you to The Triangle?
A: I have not always said Y’all. I came to NC for high school and college at The University of North Carolina School of the Arts to study voice. My family lived in NJ at the time. I then moved to The Triangle.
Q: Did you feel welcomed right away moving to the area? How have you seen the area grow over the years?
A: I did feel welcome to the area, however growing up in arts schools, I did not understand the fascination with basketball, fraternities and sororities as they were not a part of my experience. I did adapt and grew to love the area.
I moved to The Triangle before I 40 went to Wilmington and before 15/501 was 4 lanes between Pittsborough and Chapel Hill. I first lived on Manns Chapel Road before all the development, and I felt that I was out in the middle of nowhere. How funny is that? Manns Chapel Road now feels close to Chapel Hill. When I drove to the airport or the beach it was a long trip as the roads were all 2 lane roads. This was all before Meadowmont and Southern Village in Chapel Hill. I was shocked that Chapel Hill approved planned communities. Now look at Chapel Hill, there is a Target on Franklin St.
Q: We have featured some of your singing performances and theater productions in the past. Where did your love of music come from?
A: My love of music came from my Mother and Sister. My Mom was a Music Teacher and my Sister is a Flutist. We grew up with classical music in the home with my Mom playing piano, singing and with my sister practicing her flute for hours. When I was young, I circled her feet when she practiced. Very quickly I learned the Flute repertoire and sang along.
Q: What places in The Triangle do you recommend visiting for music, theater, art/history? Either to enjoy as pleasure or to take part in or classes to learn from.
A: I will keep my list to Durham & Orange counties. Hillsborough has a wealth of historic sites, museums and facilities to visit. Durham and Chapel Hill’s museums are lovely. For performances in Durham, DPAC, Carolina Theatre, The Arts Council, Meddlesome Theatre. In Chapel Hill, Memorial Hall, Carrboro, Center Theatre formerly The Arts Center. Many of the before mentioned, are performance venues where I have performed.
Q: You are such a knowledgeable and personable individual, you always bring the party! How active are you in the community to spread your energy and skills?
A: Thanks so very much for that. I do like to enjoy myself and I love to bring laughter to a room. I have been honored to serve as a Chairperson, Executive Committee Member or member on several Board of Directors and Committees over my tenure in The Triangle Area. They range from Chambers to Arts Organizations and Real Estate Associations, as they are my passions. I enjoy giving back and leading with ideas while speaking up about opportunities that make a difference.
Q: What are some restaurants and boutiques you love in The Triangle?
A: I love to support locally owned retail establishments and restaurants as in my marketing and advertising career, I got to know so many. There are still some left and I just cherish them all. I can’t mention them all here so please excuse the ones left off my list. I will keep this list to just Durham. Perhaps in the future I will share my favorites in other communities. Durham Retail; Smitten Boutique, Hometown Apparel, One World Market, The Regulator Bookshop, Parker & Otis and I miss Morgan Imports and Vaguely Reminiscent. Durham Restaurants; Vin Rouge, Parazade, M Sushi, La Casita Dominician, Bar Virgile, Alley 26, Shanghai, and I miss Tyler’s.
Q: Do you have a life motto you like to live by?
A: There is a “Silver Cloud to every Lining”. I said this on stage in a show one time and got my lines mixed up from “Silver Lining to every Cloud”. We kept it for the reminder of the run of the show. It became my motto as I love to find the good in everything.
Q: If you could meet one historic person, who would it be and why?
A: Well two come to mind. Vincent van Gogh and Alexander Calder. I grew up going to museums in Manhattan and saw the van Gogh exhibit at the Met in the 70’s. When visiting the old Whitney in the 80’s, I loved seeing “The Circus” by Calder along with the stabiles at Lincoln Center.
