Swansboro Community
Original Content by Carl Johnson
Tucked along the Crystal Coast of eastern North Carolina, Swansboro stands as a picturesque waterfront town where history, coastal culture, and friendly community spirit come together. Known affectionately as the “Friendly City by the Sea,” Swansboro sits at the mouth of the White Oak River, where the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway — a setting that has shaped the town’s character.
How It Started Swansboro’s roots stretch back to the early 1700s when settlers began establishing a community atop what had once been an Algonkian Indian village on the banks of the White Oak River. With fertile waters, protective marshes, and access to the coast, the settlement grew into a thriving colonial port. In 1783, Swansboro was officially incorporated as Swannsborough, named after Samuel Swann, a noted speaker of the North Carolina House of Commons. Shipbuilding — a trade that took advantage of the abundant forests and deep waters — became a central industry, helping the town thrive through early American history (Historic Swansboro -).
Swansboro has a great and cared for Historic District they are proud of. Visit their website, Swansboro Historical Association, here for more great information on the Swansboro Historic District, including a popular tour of the area's homes and even ghost tours!
Today, Swansboro continues to balance its historic charm with modern coastal living, attracting residents and visitors who relish waterfront views, small-town hospitality, and outdoor recreation.

Coastal Community and Events
Swansboro’s sense of community is perhaps most evident in its year-round calendar of festivals, celebrations, and gatherings that bring locals and visitors together.
Arguably the town’s most famous event, the Swansboro Mullet Festival celebrates more than just the fish — it celebrates the town’s cultural heritage and working waterfront identity. Starting in 1954 as a modest gathering to mark the completion of the White Oak River Bridge, the festival has grown into one of eastern North Carolina’s most anticipated annual events. Today, it features lively parades, live music, street vendors, local seafood (especially fried mullet), and family-friendly games like the Mullet Toss and Little Mullet activities (Mullet Festival Happenings | Swansboro Festivals). Traditionally held in October, so make sure a plan a trip with this popular fun event in mind.
