North Carolina is known for its beautiful natural landscape. It is the perfect location where you can hike the great outdoors or take a quick drive over to the Atlantic Ocean beaches! Not to be overlooked are the large and calming lakes that are popular vacation spots throughout North Carolina! The following lakes listed in this article are the perfect small-town locations, where you can relax while fishing or enjoying a day boating out on the water. There are multiple Lake Living Communities which are closest to the Raleigh-Durham area in the area which we will be featuring in this Neighborhood Series.
Kerr Lake
Located on the Northern border of North Carolina stretching into Virginia is a 50,000 acre reservoir called Kerr Lake. The state recreation area surrounding Kerr Lake supplies multiple campgrounds and RV hook ups, as well as lake access points for boating. The recreation areas also have several swim beaches making it the perfect spot for all lake activities!
Located on the Northern border of North Carolina stretching into Virginia is a 50,000 acre reservoir called Kerr Lake. The state recreation area surrounding Kerr Lake supplies multiple campgrounds and RV hook ups, as well as lake access points for boating. The recreation areas also have several swim beaches making it the perfect spot for all lake activities!
Kerr Lake is located in Henderson and Vance County, giving it a great location to multiple shopping centers, marketplaces, small specialty stores, and more. There are even historic walking and hiking trails nearby, highlighting the architecture and history of Henderson and Vance County. The area has multiple options for hotels around Kerr Lake, as well as lake homes available to rent. There are a few lakefront home properties, though much of the shoreline is undeveloped. The lake has two main marinas, allowing easy access for boat docking and storage. Jet skis, water skiing, and tubing are all welcomed on the lake. There are multiple events throughout the summer months held at Lake Kerr. From Independence Day fireworks to a September Bass Fishing League Tournament and their annual Show, Shine, Drag, & Dine/East Coast Drag Time Hall of Fame drag car showcase, there is much to do.

Jordan Lake
Jordan Lake is a 14,000-acre reservoir with undeveloped shorelines, located about 30 miles west of Raleigh. There are nine lake access areas scattered throughout, with over 1,000 campsites for primitive tents, group camps, and RV hookups. Jordan Lake State Recreation Area offers a number of boat ramps as well as seven swim beaches, playground, pavilions, and even BBQ pits.
Perfect for the rustic camper, Jordan Lake offers 14 miles of beautiful natural hiking trails, abundant animal life, and a visitor center exhibit hall to further explore the ecology of the lake. A fun fact about Jordan Lake is that it is one of the largest summer homes of the American Bald Eagle, so birdwatching in the area is a must!

According to the Jordan Lake’s visitors guide the “fish species that are available within the lake include, striped bass, largemouth bass, white perch, hybrids, sunfish, catfish, bluegill and crappie.”

The area has a Natural Learning Area highlighting the birds and wildlife by the lake. There is also a free public 18-hole disc golf course! Hyco Lake is perfect for primitive camping, RVs, and cabin camping. There is a 65-acre recreation park with a community house that hosts summer events such as concerts and is available to rent!
Windfall Creek is a luxury community bordering Jordan Lake which offers the quietness of lake-life with the just minutes commute to the Triangle. This community also has architectural guidelines in place to help ensure a communal look to its homes, as well as to help protect the natural environment. Windfall Creek builds on large three-to-ten-acre parcels of land. The shoreline of Hyco Lake isn’t too overdeveloped, with a mix of between 1,600 homes and the beautiful, wooded nature. There is currently a proposal for a large new housing project called The Peninsula or Hyco Pointe or the Pointe on Hyco Lake which will add many homes and development to the area.
Falls Lake
Falls Lake is a 12,000 undeveloped reservoir with over 300 campsites throughout! Like many other State Recreation areas there are multiple RV hookups, cabins, and areas for primitive camping along the lake. Falls Lake also offers five swim beaches, boat access points, as well as non-motor-powered boating areas safe for swimming and paddle boards.

According to NCPark.gov “The Beaverdam access offers a network of mountain biking trails as well as a separate and quiet lake impoundment perfect for paddling, fishing and swimming. The Mountains-to-Sea State Trail winds through parts of the recreation area and is a centerpiece of a network of hiking trails.”
Pointe at Falls Lake is a community of large homes right by the lake and recreation park area. Pointe offers homes from $400-$900,000 making a permanent residence or a vacation home possible. Just north of Raleigh, Falls Lake is a convenient location for locals looking for a fun lake trip getaway while still having modern conveniences.
Mayo Lake
In Northeast Person County, only about nine miles from Roxboro, you will find Mayo Lake. There is much to do listed on Mayo Lake’s website including horseback riding, boat, fishing, hiking, golf courses, museums, and Mayo Park's Environmental Education and Community Center with rooms available to rent. The 85-mile shoreline of Mayo Lake has RV hookups, campsites, three playgrounds, and many picnic areas. There are even six miles of natural trails wrapping around Mayo Lake.
As a main feature for Person County, the 2,800 acres of Lake Mayo is set “apart from other campgrounds with its year-round outdoor oriented programming. Mayo Park's programming includes canoe and kayak races, 5K trail races, interpretive nature hikes, concerts and movie screenings at our amphitheater, fishing tournaments and programs for youths and adults, educational seminars, and canoe tours.”

Graham-Mebane Lake
Graham-Mebane Lake, formally known as Quaker Lake, is a smaller lake in NC covering 650 acres. According to the City of Graham’s website the “Lake’s primary purpose is a source of drinking water for the citizens of Graham, Mebane, Green Level, and Swepsonville.” As for recreational use, the lake offers most amenities, from boating and fishing to picnic areas and hiking, but no swimming or wading is allowed. The lake is known as one of the top ten fishing lakes in NC with a thriving largemouth bass population and multiple tournaments throughout the year! The lake has a great marina with docks and boat launching zones, as well as areas to purchase bait and tackle.

Woodlawn is a neighborhood right by Graham-Mebane lake, their schools even sit right by the water! The area has a variety of homes and apartments that are owner occupied with some rentals, and a median home price of around $300,000.
Lake Cammack
Located in Burlington, NC you can find the 800 acres of Lake Cammack, also known as the Burlington Reservoir. The recreational use of the lake includes boating, fishing, paddle boarding, and hiking. There is a 2-mile hiking trail around Lake Cammack. Right by the marina you can find the Civitan Building which has playgrounds, a pool, rentable pavilions, a full kitchen, and a ball field. This makes Lake Cammack a great place for reunions or corporate events.
