Steven Ray Miller has specialized in gouache (opaque water color) paintings for the last 46 years. Unlike traditional watercolorists, Miller paints on dry rag paper, using two coats of paint for clearly defined details and saturated colors. Favorite subjects include landscapes, architectural views, and florals.Steven Ray Miller has been chosen Durham’s Best Artist by readers of Durham Magazine 3 years in a row, and was selected as Micro-Enterprise Business of the Year by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce in 2017. This year, the Steven Ray Miller Gallery and Frame Shop was named Durham’s Best Art Gallery. You have probably seen his Y’all Means EVERYONE bumper stickers

Steven graduated from Duke University in 1973 with a dual degree in Studio Art and Psychology, and instructed 10,000 students of all ages while working as an Artist-in-Residence with the South Carolina Arts Commission. Miller has exhibited throughout the United States in more than 100 one-man shows, and 50 juried competitions. His paintings and prints are found in many prominent corporate art collections. In 2005 he was commissioned to create a series of four original paintings for the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club in Durham, NC. Private collectors include Ken Blanchard (The One Minute Manager), Colleen C. Barrett (President Emeritus, Southwest Airlines), Roberta Peters (opera singer), and Richard Riley (former Governor of South Carolina).
