10 Moving Tips for Your Best Move Yet

Packing up your home and moving to a new house doesn’t always have to be a nightmare. Following a moving checklist will help organize all the things you have to do so you will know what you need to do first and last when the time comes. 1. Get rid of the clutter
Packing every single thing you own into bags and boxes can be very overwhelming. Before you begin packing, get rid of any unnecessary items or clutter that you own. You will then have less to pack, move and unpack.
2. Have a folder
Collect your rental or purchasing papers, moving contracts, etc in one folder. If any questions come up during the moving process you won’t have to shuffle through a clutter of papers.
3. Book early
If you plan on hiring moving services, renting supplies, or painting or cleaning, book them early. If you wait to book last minute you could risk not finding anyone for the job or paying more.
4. Schedule utilities
When your moving date is finalized, make sure you contact your utility providers to schedule service at your new home and keep this in your moving folder. In addition, schedule stops of service at your old home.
5. Choose a mid-week mid-month move in date
The easiest way to save money is to plan for a mid-month or mid-week move. Demand for moving on the weekends is higher and therefore, comes with a price. Moving company and truck rental rates tend to be lower Monday to Friday and they also tend to be lower in the middle of the month.
6. Color code moving boxes
Instead of having to go through all the boxes when you are unpacking to see what goes where, put color coded sticky notes on the boxes to indicate what box goes to what room. This is an easy and cheap way to make the unpacking process go a lot smoother.
7. Place heavy items in small boxes
While it would be tempting to place heaving items in large boxes try to avoid doing this. Placing heavy items in small boxes makes it easier to carry the item and there is a smaller chance the item will break through the bottom of the box.
8. Rekey your house as soon as possible
You never know who was given a copy of the keys from the previous owners. For safety purposes, you might want to rekey your entire house before moving in. All you have to do is call a locksmith to come out to the house to change all of the locks. It should only take a few hours.
9. Use foam pouches for plates, bowls, and glassware
Covering items in plastic wrap and cushioning takes time and a lot of packing tape to secure. Instead try using simple foam pouches to hold everything from dinnerware to glassware.
